Project Brief: 132 kV Kisumu–Bondo–Rang’ala Transmission Line

Executive Summary

The 132 kV Kisumu–Bondo–Rang’ala Transmission Line Project is a strategic grid reinforcement initiative aimed at expanding electricity access, enhancing reliability, and reducing transmission losses in Western Kenya. The project will connect Kisumu, Bondo, and Rang’ala through a modern high-voltage transmission corridor, supporting residential, commercial, and industrial growth in Siaya, Kisumu, and surrounding counties.

The project is expected to unlock greater stability of power supply to over 1 million people, strengthen integration with existing 132 kV and 400 kV backbones, and support Kenya’s goal of universal electricity access by 2030.

Key Metrics

  • Project Type: High Voltage Transmission Line (132 kV, single circuit)

  • Route Length: ~70 km (Kisumu – Bondo – Rang’ala)

  • Substations: Kisumu North (existing), Bondo (new), Rang’ala (existing node)

  • Capacity: 132 kV, 200 MVA (planned)

  • Developer: Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) with potential PPP support

  • Status: Planning / feasibility stage (alignment with national Least Cost Power Development Plan)

  • Estimated COD: 2027

  • Beneficiaries: 1M+ residents, growing SMEs, industrial parks in Kisumu/Siaya Counties

  • Climate Impact: Reduced use of diesel generation → 80,000+ tCO₂ avoided annually

Strategic Rationale

  • Energy Access: Expands reliable power to underserved Bondo and Siaya regions.

  • Grid Stability: Reinforces Kisumu hub, reducing overloading on Sondu and Olkaria feeds.

  • Economic Growth: Supports agro-processing, fisheries, and industrialization along Lake Victoria.

  • Regional Integration: Connects to Kenya–Uganda interconnector for cross-border power trade.

  • Investor Opportunity: Attractive PPP/DFI financing potential with strong government support.

Environmental & Social

  • ESIA Status: To be initiated; bird/bat monitoring required due to proximity to Lake Victoria flyway.

  • Wayleave Acquisition: Engagement with communities along Kisumu–Bondo–Rang’ala corridor planned.

  • Community Benefits: Jobs during construction, improved local electrification, CSR initiatives.
